Longbow Golf Club was selected to host a qualifying event for Golfweek’s Junior Series, which is composed of the three 36-hole events to be contested at: Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona (September 25-26, 2010); Willowbrook Plantation in Pawleys Island, South Carolina (August 28-29, 2010); and Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan (August 21-22, 2010). The top boys and girls emerging from these three qualifiers will be given an exemption to both the East Coast and West Coast Golfweek Junior Invitational – to be played at Reunion Resort in Orlando, Florida (November 6-7, 2010) and Troon North in Scottsdale, Arizona (January 16-17, 2011) respectively. “Supporting junior golf has always been one of the most important initiatives for us at Longbow Golf Club,” said Jay Larscheid, Director of Golf at Longbow Golf Club. “Not only is it in our business interest to encourage the next generation of customers, the game itself teaches all the right things – honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, courtesy and much more. We look forward to another great event.”

Longbow is no stranger to competitive junior golf. In fact, the Winn Grips Heather Farr Classic hosted by Longbow Golf Club has been a mainstay on the American Junior Golf Association’s (AJGA) schedule since 1999 when current PGA TOUR professional and 2010 Waste Management Phoenix Open Champion, Hunter Mahan, took home the trophy in the Boys Division. Other notable past champions include reigning 2010 U.S. Women’s Open Champion, Paula Creamer, who notched back-to-back victories in 2003 and 2004; and locals Amanda Blumenherst (2002), Drew Kittleson (2005) Philip Francis (2006), Trey Kaahanui (2008) and Kyung Kim (2008). In addition to hosting competitive events, Longbow has served as a place for junior golfers to learn the game and hone their skills. In 2010, Longbow joined with The First Tee of Phoenix to open a satellite facility on-property along with the founding of the OB Sports Golf Academy in the same year. The latter represents one of the most comprehensive game improvement programs available to junior golfers; and in its relatively short existence, several students have already earned top finishes in AJGA events, appearances in the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open and several golf scholarships to prominent universities.

Golfweek's Junior Invitational has been recognized by the AJGA. Players who place highly in the Invitational will receive special exemptions from the AJGA. The AJGA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA, the largest association of its kind, has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 50 states and over 30 foreign countries.

Vu, Holen win Golfweek Junior Series Event at Longbow Golf Club!
By Golfweek Staff September 27, 2009

Lilia Vu, 11, broke the record for youngest winner of a Golfweek Junior Series event Sunday, closing with a 2-over 73 at Longbow Golf Club to finish at 4-over 146. Vu topped Jackie Chang and Sun Park by three shots.Vu, of Fountain Valley, Calif., closed her round with a birdie on No. 18.“I hit a good tee shot, then hit my fairway wood just short of the green and pitched to 8 feet,” said Vu, the youngest competitor in the field. “I was looking at a downhill birdie putt with 4 inches of break and I made it.”With the victory, Vu qualifies for the Golfweek Junior Invitational, Nov. 7-8 at Ginn Reunion Resort near Orlando, Fla.

Joining Vu at the Golfweek Junior will be Chang, Park and Morgan Thompson.Vu isn’t a stranger to big victories. She won the 9-10 age division at the Junior World Golf Championship and the San Diego Junior Masters in 2008. This summer, she won the Toyota Cup and Yorba Linda Open.“I still need to practice harder and work on making good putts,” Vu said.Chang, 17, of Paradise Valley, Ariz., was 4 over after seven holes, but birdied Nos. 8, 11 and 15 to close with 72. She will attend North Carolina in the fall. Park opened with 76 and birdied No. 18 in the final round to shoot 73.“I didn’t even know Vu was 11,” said Park, 18, who will attend Yale in the fall. “On this golf course, those scores (73-73) are very impressive.”

In the boys’ division, first-round leader J.J. Holen followed a 1-under 70 with a 71 to cruise to a three-shot victory over Kyle Jones (72). Seven juniors received invites to the Golfweek Junior Invitational, and among the champions are an 11-year-old and someone who needed a pick-me-up. Holen, a 17-year-old from Castaic, Calif., birdied Nos. 15-16 to seal the deal.Holen and Jones, as well as Blake Huser, advance to the Golfweek Junior Invitational.“If anything this gives me confidence going there,” said Holen, who is undecided on a college. “I know every player will be as good as me if not better, so I’ll have to beat them with my mental game because they all hit the ball long.”Jones, who opened with 72, birdied Nos. 2-3 to tie Holen for the lead early in the final round. However, Jones made a double bogey on the par-4 12th and a bogey on the par-4 13th.“It’s always disappointing when you don’t win, but Tiger Woods doesn’t win them all either,” said Jones, who lives in Snowflake, Ariz., and is undecided on college. “It could have been worse out there, but I’m happy.”Huser’s closing 71 included four bogeys and four birdies. The 16-year-old from Altoona, Iowa, was excited to advance to the Golfweek Junior Invitational.“I think it’s pretty cool,” he said. “I’m from Iowa and now I get to go to Orlando. Hopefully, college coaches will get to see how I do.” Click here to view complete story on Golfweek.com
